A large amount of our clients are wheelchair users. When we learned about a program in Langley B.C. where individuals spent part of the day in a wheelchair to find out what wheelchair users in the community were experiencing, we knew we had to share.
It was a sunny day in September 2015 when City of Langley Mayor Ted Schaffer spent four hours in a wheelchair as part of the Try on a Disability challenge put on by Langley Pos-Abilities. The organization works to improve the quality of life of people living with disabilities in the Langley region.
There were a number of event participants who took on the wheelchair challenge. Schaffer found himself wheeling up the ramp in front of City Hall as did other members of his team. Students of a local university even filmed the experience with examples posted on the Langley Pos-Abilities blog. Insights from participant experiences are shared on the videos and include suggestions to make life easier for everyone in the community.
Expect the challenge to be back again in September 2016. We’re encouraged to see so many individuals getting to know what others experience.
